The Indian Premier League, commonly referred to as IPL, is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India based on a franchise system. The league spans over two months, during which players shed their national colors to represent their franchises. IPL is governed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and has an exclusive window in the ICC Future Tours Programme.

The tournament is contested by eight teams representing different cities in India during March or April and May every year. Starting from 2022, two new teams will be added to the league, adding more excitement and action to the tournament. IPL is one of the world’s most attended and lucrative tournaments. According to the BCCI, IPL contributed 11.5 billion to the GDP of the Indian economy in 2015.

The inaugural edition of IPL took place in 2008, a year after the Indian cricket team had won the first edition of the T20 World Cup. Lalit Modi, who was then the BCCI Vice-President, is said to be the mastermind behind IPL. During the launch of the league, Lalit Modi mentioned that IPL has been designed to entice a new generation of sports fans into the grounds throughout the country. The dynamic Twenty20 format has been designed to attract a young fan base, including women and children.

Since its inception, 14 tournaments have been played, and the most successful team is Mumbai Indians, winning the title five times. Chennai Super Kings have won the title four times, making them the second-most successful team in IPL history.
