The upcoming Southeast Asian Games 2023, taking place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, will showcase a diverse range of cricket tournaments featuring eight different formats. These formats include 50 overs, T20, T10, and 6s (six-a-side), with separate events for men and women in each format. Six nations, namely Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, will participate in the men’s events. In the women’s competition, Myanmar will join as the seventh team. Unfortunately, Vietnam had initially planned to compete but later withdrew from the tournament. It is worth noting that only the host country, Cambodia, will be represented in all eight events.
The cricket events at the Southeast Asian Games 2023 will feature a variety of teams competing in different formats. Here are the participating teams:
Men’s 50 overs: Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand
Men’s T20I: Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines
Men’s T10: Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia
Men’s 6s: Cambodia, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia
Women’s 50 overs: Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia
Women’s T20I: Cambodia, Singapore, Philippines, Myanmar, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia
Women’s T10: Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand
Women’s 6s: Cambodia, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, Myanmar
There will be a particular focus on the T20 tournaments, which have been granted full T20 International (T20I) status and will provide ranking points for the teams.
With the exception of the men’s 6s tournament, all other cricket events at the SEA Games 2023 will have gold medal and bronze medal playoff matches. In the men’s 6s event, all teams will play against each other once, and the top three teams will be awarded the three medals.
The cricket matches of the SEA Games 2023 will commence on April 29, almost a week prior to the official opening ceremony on May 5. All matches will take place at the AZ Group Cricket Oval in Phnom Penh.
This will be the second time cricket is included in the SEA Games. The sport made its debut at the SEA Games in 2017 in Kuala Lumpur, where T20 and 50-over tournaments were held for men, along with a women’s T20 competition. Singapore emerged as the gold medalists in the men’s T20 event, while Malaysia and Thailand claimed victory in the men’s 50 overs and women’s T20 categories, respectively.
Unfortunately, I do not have access to the specific scores and results of the cricket matches at the SEA Games 2023 as my training data only goes up until September 2021.
